Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the modernised version of Classical Arabic, the language of the Noble Qur'an and all Arab religious texts. Local varieties of Modern Standard Arabic are non-existent, and as the official language of all Arab countries, it is taught all over the Arab world in schools, colleges and universities. MSA, therefore, is often found in its written form in Arabic literature, books, newspapers, magazines and official documents, as well as in spoken form in formal contexts such as TV news and debates, speeches, government and parliament, conferences, seminars, summits, religious sermons and assemblies.

Because of this overarching status, knowledge of MSA would give the student access to a tool that allows him or her to communicate with anyone from Morocco to Iraq, and open the door to living and working anywhere in the Arab world.
